Football Club Shakhtar Donetsk ( ukrainian : Футбольний клуб « Шахта́р » Донецьк [ fʊdˈbɔlʲnɪj ˈklub ʃɐxˈtɑr doˈnɛtsʲk ], short dub “ miners ” ) is a ukrainian professional football clubhouse from the city of Donetsk. The club became the first club in independent Ukraine to win the UEFA Cup in 2009, the last class before the competition was revamped as the Europa League. FC Shakhtar Donetsk is one of two ukrainian clubs, the early being Dynamo Kyiv, who have won a major UEFA competition. In 1950, Viktor Fomin was named ukrainian Footballer of the year, despite the club finishing only 11th in the league. Supporters and rivalries [edit ]

Shakhtar Donetsk has participated in european rival since 1976, playing its beginning game against Berliner FC Dynamo in the UEFA Cup. Since 1997, the club has participated in UEFA competition annually with variable star amounts of success, and first took part in the UEFA Champions League competition in 2000. Shakhtar Donetsk played against Arsenal, Lazio and Sparta Prague upon qualifying for the group stage for the first time in 2000–01 .
