early life and education

Mourinho was born in 1963 to a big middle-class syndicate in Setúbal ( a suburb of the Lisbon metropolitan area ), Portugal, the son of José Manuel Mourinho Félix, who was known by the appoint Félix Mourinho, and wife Maria Júlia Carrajola do Santos. [ 18 ] [ 19 ] His father played football professionally for Os Belenenses and Vitória de Setúbal, earning one capital for Portugal in the class of his career. His mother was a chief school teacher from an affluent background ; [ 20 ] her uncle funded the construction of the Vitória de Setúbal football stadium. The precipitate of António de Oliveira Salazar ‘s Estado Novo government in April 1974, however, led to the syndicate losing all but a single place in nearby Palmela. [ 21 ] Mourinho wanted to follow in his father ‘s footsteps and joined the Belenenses youth team. Graduating to the senior level, he played at Rio Ave ( where his father was coach ), Belenenses, and Sesimbra. He lacked the needed pace and might to become a professional and chose to focus on becoming a football coach rather. [ 20 ] [ 22 ] [ 23 ] His mother enrolled him in a commercial enterprise school, but Mourinho dropped out on his first day, deciding he would rather focus on sport, and chose to attend the Instituto Superior de Educação Física ( ISEF ), Technical University of Lisbon, to study sports science. [ 21 ] After attending coaching courses held by the English and Scottish Football Associations, former Scotland director Andy Roxburgh took eminence of the young Portuguese ‘s drive and attention to detail. [ 24 ] Mourinho sought to redefine the role of coach in football by mixing coaching theory with motivational and psychological techniques. [ 20 ]

Coaching career

After leaving his occupation as a school coach, Mourinho looked for a path into master management in his hometown and became youth team coach at Vitória de Setúbal in the early 1990s. former he accepted the put of adjunct director at Estrela district attorney Amadora, [ 24 ] then was a lookout at Ovarense. then, in 1992, an opportunity arise to work as a translator for a top alien coach : Bobby Robson had been appointed as the new coach of Lisbon club Sporting CP and needed an english-speaking local coach to work as his interpreter. [ 22 ] His presentation was on 7 July, aboard president of the united states Sousa Cintra, director Robson and Manuel Fernandes. [ 25 ] Mourinho began discussing tactics and coaching with Robson in his translate function. [ 22 ] Robson was sacked by the club in December 1993. When Porto appointed him as their head coach, Mourinho moved with him, continuing to coach and interpret for players at the new club. [ 24 ] The Porto team, consisting of players like Ljubinko Drulović, Domingos, Rui Barros, Jorge Costa and Vítor Baía, went on to dominate Portuguese football the take after years. With Robson as head coach and Mourinho as his adjunct, Porto reached the 1993–94 UEFA Champions League semi-finals, and won the 1993–94 Taça de Portugal, the 1994–95 and 1995–96 portuguese backing, and the 1994, 1995 and 1996 Portuguese Super Cup, the latter with a 5–0 victory over arch-rivals Benfica, in what proved to be Robson ‘s final game at Porto before moving to Barcelona, earning Robson the nickname “ Bobby Five-O ” in Portugal. After two years at Porto, the duet moved again, joining Barcelona in 1996. [ 26 ] Mourinho and his class moved to the city of Barcelona, and he gradually became a big figure of the club ‘s staff by translating at bid conferences, planning rehearse sessions and helping players through tactical advice and analyses of the opposition. Robson and Mourinho ‘s styles complemented each other : the Englishman favoured an attack style, while Mourinho covered defensive options, and the Portuguese ‘s love of plan and train combined with Robson ‘s mastermind man-management. The Barcelona attack was led by a prime Ronaldo – whom Mourinho regards as the best player post-Diego Maradona. [ 27 ] The partnership was fruitful and Barcelona finished the season by winning the european Cup Winners ‘ Cup, the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España. [ 28 ] Robson moved clubs the follow season but this time Mourinho did not follow as Barcelona were keen to retain him as assistant coach. [ 24 ] The two remained dear friends and Mourinho subsequently reflected on the effect Robson had had upon him :

One of the most authoritative things I learnt from Bobby Robson is that when you win, you should n’t assume you are the team, and when you lose, you should n’t think you are rubbish. [ 24 ]

He began working with Robson ‘s successor, Louis van Gaal, and he learned much from the Dutchman ‘s conscientious dash. Both assistant and mind coach combined their studious approach to the game and Barcelona won La Liga twice in Van Gaal ‘s first two years as coach. [ 24 ] Van Gaal saw that his number two had the promise to be more than a skilled adjunct. He let Mourinho develop his own independent coach manner and entrusted him with the coaching duties of Barcelona B. [ 26 ] Van Gaal besides let Mourinho take charge of the first team ( acting as Mourinho ‘s adjunct himself ) for certain trophies, like the Copa Catalunya, which Mourinho won in 2000. [ 29 ]

[ 31 ]

When I spoke with Van Gaal about going back to Portugal to be an assistant at Benfica, he said : “ No, do n’t go. Tell Benfica if they want a first-team coach you will go ; if they want an assistant you will stay. ” [ 32 ]

Mourinho was highly critical of Ferreira, whom he had first encountered as his teacher at ISEF and late lambasted the veteran passenger car by stating, “ This could be the history of a donkey who worked for 30 years but never became a horse. ” [ 33 ] alone weeks after being given the speculate at Benfica, Mourinho ‘s mentor, Sir Bobby Robson, offered him the assistant coach ‘s character at Newcastle United. such was Robson ‘s desperation for Mourinho to join him he offered to step down after two years in charge and bridge player over the reins to Mourinho. Mourinho turned the offer down and said he knew Robson would never step down at the club he loved. [ 34 ] Mourinho and Mozer proved a popular combination, enjoying a 3–0 win against rivals Sporting CP in December. [ 35 ] [ 36 ] Their reign, however, appeared to be at risk after Benfica ‘s election turned against golf club president João Vale vitamin e Azevedo, and the newly elected Manuel Vilarinho said that he would instate ex-Benfica musician Toni as his newfangled passenger car. [ 26 ] Although Vilarinho had no purpose of firing him immediately, Mourinho used the victory over Sporting to test the president of the united states ‘s loyalty and he asked for a contract extension. [ 35 ] Vilarinho refused the requirement and Mourinho resigned from his position immediately. He left the clubhouse on 5 December 2000 [ 37 ] after just nine league games in charge. Upon late reflection, Vilarinho rued his inadequate judgment and expressed his frustration at losing Mourinho :

[ Put me ] back then [ and ] I would do precisely the diametric : I would extend his compress. merely late I realised that one ‘s personality and pride can not be put before the interest of the mental hospital we serve. [ 35 ]

porto

Mourinho was then hand-pick by Porto to replace Octávio Machado on 23 January 2002. [ 42 ] At this time, Porto was in fifth place in the Liga ( behind Sporting CP, Boavista, União de Leiria and Benfica ), had been eliminated from the Taça de Portugal and was in last place in their UEFA Champions League second group stagecoach. Mourinho guided the team to third station that year after a firm 15-game run ( including 11 wins ) and gave the promise of “ making Porto champions next year ”. He cursorily identified several keystone players whom he saw as the backbone of what he believed would be a arrant Porto team : Vítor Baía, Ricardo Carvalho, Costinha, Deco, Dmitri Alenichev and Hélder Postiga. The signings from other clubs included Nuno Valente and Derlei from União de Leiria ; Paulo Ferreira from Vitória de Setúbal ; Pedro Emanuel from Boavista ; and Edgaras Jankauskas and Maniche, who both had been out of contract at Benfica .

2002–03 season

During the pre-season, Mourinho put detailed reports of the team train on the golf club web site. The reports were filled with formal vocabulary, as, for example, he referred to a 20-kilometre ( 12 secret intelligence service ) ramble on as an carry aerobic exercise. One of the key aspects in Mourinho-era Porto was the coerce play, which started at the offense pipeline, dubbed “ pressão alta “ ( “ high pressure ” ). The physical and contentious abilities of the teams ‘ defenders and midfielders allowed Porto to apply atmospheric pressure from the dysphemistic lines and forced opponents either to concede the musket ball or try longer, changeable passes. In 2003, Mourinho won his first Primeira Liga with a 27–5–2 record, 11 points clear of Benfica, the team he quit two years earlier. The sum of 86 points out of the possible maximum of 102 was a portuguese record, until the 2015–16 season won by Benfica ( 88 points ), since the rule of three points per win was introduced. [ 43 ] In the second leg at Old Trafford, Porto were on the scepter of an away-goals get the better of when Costinha scored a goal in the 89th infinitesimal to win the tie. Mourinho flamboyantly celebrated the goal by leaving his dugout canoe, fists punching the vent as he sprinted down the avocation near to his celebrating players – this dramatic celebration is regarded as the here and now when Mourinho announced himself to the game. [ 44 ] Mourinho ‘s Porto gain over Ferguson ‘s United was a preview of his move to the Premier League managing Chelsea, where the two men would enjoy a competitive but respectful kinship. In 2005, after Chelsea clinched the Premier League title, Ferguson had his players form a guard of honor at Chelsea ‘s next plot at Old Trafford, [ 45 ] a privilege that Mourinho returned in 2007 at Stamford Bridge after Ferguson ‘s team were confirmed league champions. [ 46 ] [ 47 ]

Liverpool are a team that interests everyone and Chelsea does not interest me so much because it is a new stick out with lots of money invested in it. I think it is a project which, if the club fail to win everything, then [ Roman ] Abramovich could retire and take the money out of the club. It ‘s an changeable project. It is interesting for a coach to have the money to hire quality players but you never know if a project like this will bring success. [ 48 ]

Liverpool offered their managerial put to Rafael Benítez and Mourinho rather accepted a bombastic offer from Roman Abramovich and pledged his immediate future to Chelsea. [ 48 ]

He retained Steve Clarke, a long-serving early actor at Chelsea, who had besides performed an adjunct managerial-type role under previous managers at the club. In terms of outgo, Mourinho carried on where his predecessor Claudio Ranieri left off, as, bankrolled by Roman Abramovich, he spent in overindulgence of £70 million in remove fees on players such as Tiago ( £10 million ) from Benfica, Michael Essien ( £24.4 million ) from Lyon, Didier Drogba ( £24 million ) from Marseille, Mateja Kežman ( £5.4 million ) from PSV, and Porto copulate Ricardo Carvalho ( £19.8 million ) and Paulo Ferreira ( £13.3 million ) .

Manager profile

Tactics

In the mod world, at least at elite level, José Mourinho stands alone. He was at the greatest coach seminar the global has seen [ at Barcelona in the mid-90s ], when the game as we know it was shaped, but he did not draw the lapp lessons everybody else did. The other eight [ future coaches who were besides at the golf club ] espoused the proactive, possession-based football seeded at the club by Vic Buckingham, developed by Rinus Michels and taken to new levels by Johan Cruyff. Mourinho, however, was unlike. Mourinho believed in reactive football. He was the foreigner, the outcast who immediately revels in his character as the benighted lord. Saturday ‘s game against Manchester United was typical. Others, playing at home in a equal that could effectively ensure the claim, might have felt compelled to attack. Mourinho [ as coach of Chelsea ] fielded Kurt Zouma, a cardinal defender, in midfield, sitting deep, and won the game with 28 % possession .

Jonathan Wilson writing for The Guardian : “ José Mourinho, the anti-Barcelona, stands alone in modern football ”, 23 April 2015. [ 181 ]
Mourinho has been noted for his tactical art, [ 182 ] [ 183 ] [ 184 ] plot management, [ 185 ] and adaptability to unlike situations. A common feature of speech of his teams is playing with three or more central midfielders, as Mourinho has stressed midfield superiority as all-important in winning games. As a Porto director, Mourinho employed a diamond 4–4–2 formation, with his midfield – consist of Costinha or Pedro Mendes as defensive midfielder ; Maniche and Dmitri Alenichev as wide cardinal midfielders ; and Deco on the tiptoe – acting as a cohesive unit rather than a solicitation of individuals, [ 186 ] providing Porto with midfield superiority while allowing the full-backs to move forward. [ 186 ] During his first two years at Chelsea, Mourinho employed a fluid 4–3–3 formation, having Claude Makélélé play the function of deep-lying midfielder. This gave Chelsea a three-against-two midfield advantage over most english teams playing 4–4–2 at the clock time, and helped Chelsea win Premier League titles in 2004–05 and 2005–06. Mourinho explained :

Look, if I have a triangulum in midfield – Claude Makélélé behind and two others just in front – I will constantly have an advantage against a pure 4–4–2 where the central midfielders are side by side. That ‘s because I will constantly have an excess man. It starts with Makelele, who is between the lines. If cipher comes to him he can see the unharmed lurch and has time. If he gets closed down it means one of the two early central midfielders is overt. If they are closed toss off and the early team ‘s wingers come inside to help, it means there is space now for us on the flank, either for our own wingers or for our full-backs. There is nothing a pure 4–4–2 can do to stop things. [ 187 ]

Andrei Shevchenko ‘s sign language forced Mourinho to switch to a 4–1–3–2 for the 2006–07 season. [ 188 ] At Inter, he won his first Serie A title alternating between a 4–3–3 and a diamond [ 189 ] and in his moment season, the signings of Samuel Eto’o, Diego Milito, Wesley Sneijder and Goran Pandev, along with that of Thiago Motta, enabled him to play a 4–2–3–1 formation, effectively becoming a arrant 4–5–1 without the ball, with which he won the ternary that season. As Real Madrid director from 2010 to 2013, Mourinho utilised an even more flexible 4–2–3–1 formation, with Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira as holding midfielders, Mesut Özil as the attacking midfielder, and Cristiano Ronaldo and Ángel Di María flanking Karim Benzema as the lone striker. [ 190 ] This constitution allowed for rapid counter-attacks, with the four attackers being able to play any of the four offensive positions. [ 190 ] In the 2011–12 season, Madrid won La Liga nine points clear of second-placed Barcelona, breaking many records, including points collected ( 100 ) and goals scored ( 121 ). [ 190 ] In all of Mourinho ‘s three seasons at Madrid, the team systematically reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. The counter-attacking arrangement pioneered by Mourinho continued, with its variations, to be used to promote success at Madrid by his successors Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane. [ 191 ] Mourinho is praised for his quick reactions to a game ‘s events. [ 192 ] In a 2013 Champions League find with Manchester United at Old Trafford, and with Real Madrid losing 1–0 and facing at hand elimination, United ‘s Nani was sent off for a harsh charge on Álvaro Arbeloa. Mourinho quickly introduced Luka Modrić and moved Sami Khedira to the right flank, where Manchester United had a numeric disadvantage due to Nani ‘s red circuit board. This forced United coach Sir Alex Ferguson to move Danny Welbeck from the midfield to that flank, frankincense freeing Xabi Alonso, and two promptly goals turned the game in Madrid ‘s party favor. [ 192 ] [ 193 ] Mourinho is besides renowned for constantly being intelligent about his following opponent and tactically outwitting early managers in games. In a 2004 family Champions League hard stage game between Porto and Sir Alex Ferguson ‘s Manchester United, Mourinho had already asserted that United ‘s weakness was on the flanks, specially on the exit where Quinton Fortune was protected by Ryan Giggs. The central match of Maniche and Deco targeted that flank with their thread passes, and Dmitri Alenichev wreaked havoc. He set up Benny McCarthy ‘s counterweight in the first one-half, then with United focussed on defending the left, Porto switched to the early side, where McCarthy was able to beat Gary Neville and Wes Brown to score the winner. [ 193 ] [ 194 ] [ 195 ] Mourinho is besides acknowledged for his attention to detail, organizational plan and in-game communication. In a 2013–14 Champions League hard game against Paris Saint-Germain, when Chelsea needed one goal within 10 minutes to progress, he played a bad 4–1–2–3 in the last quarter, which led to Demba Ba ‘s winning goal. After the game, Mourinho said that his team had worked excessively on three option formations in aim :

We trained yesterday with the three different systems we used, the one we started with, the one without [ Frank ] Lampard and ultimately the one with Demba and Fernando [ Torres ] in, and the players knew what to do. [ 196 ]

When Ba hit the winner, Mourinho darted down the touchline “ in celebration ”, but afterwards he said he was primarily running to tell Torres and Ba their positional instructions for the remaining six minutes of the contest, which is backed up by the pictures. Ba ‘s speculate was to sit in front of the defense and marker Alex if he ventured forward, Torres ‘ to man-mark Maxwell. [ 196 ] On 16 April 2017, Mourinho ‘s Manchester United all in league leaders Chelsea 2–0. [ 197 ] During the game, Mourinho instructed Ander Herrera to man-mark Eden Hazard. This tactic proved effective as Hazard, and Chelsea, were nullified for large portions of the game. A previously untested strike partnership of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard besides caused the Chelsea defense problems, with the erstwhile opening the marking in the 7th infinitesimal. Mourinho ‘s tactical organization throughout the match drew praise within the footballing world. [ 198 ]

[ 221 ] The animosity died polish, however, and the two managers made peace after Mourinho admitted that he regretted making the comment. [ 222 ] In February 2014, Mourinho referred to Wenger as a “ specialist in bankruptcy ”. [ 223 ]

Inter Milan

presentation

On 3 June 2008, during the press league introducing him as new Inter coach, Mourinho showed an about perfect Italian. Asked about how he would see players like Frank Lampard or Michael Essien in Italian Serie A, Mourinho realized that was a apt manner of making him release some statements about Chelsea players, something he had refused to do in previous questions. consequently, he hilariously replied “ Ma io non sono pirla ! ” ( Milan dialect for “ I ‘m not stupid ! “ ). [ 224 ] [ 225 ]

Lo Monaco

After Inter-Catania 2-1, played on 13 September 2008, Catania CEO Lo Monaco resented the fact that Mourinho had underlined Inter superiority in the match, particularly by saying that he could have played in finish for Inter, thus disrespecting the opponent, and stated : “ Mourinho andrebbe preso a bastonate sui denti ” ( italian for “ Mourinho should be beaten on his teeth ” ). Lo Monaco subsequently clarified that he did n’t mean to foster violence, it was just a way of saying to indicate person who should shut up. however, when asked about Lo Monaco ‘s statements, Mourinho ironically replied that he did not know him, making a pun regarding what the word “ Monaco ” indicates in the italian lyric. [ 226 ] [ 227 ]

If someone named “Monaco” wants to become famous by talking about me should pay me. By way of example, Adidas pays me a lot to talk about Adidas as a sponsor. If he wants that, he should pay me a lot.

Comparison with Mancini

On 9 November 2008, after Inter-Udinese 1-0, which Nerazzurri succeed with a late Cruz ‘s goal, [ 228 ] Mourinho had a discussion with the journalist Mario Sconcerti. As the Portuguese coach had underlined on the day before that he was collecting more points during his foremost Serie A campaign with Inter compared to Mancini ‘s first season, basically with the drive of defending his function, which media considered below expectations, Sconcerti invited Mourinho to avoid comparisons with the italian director, who could n’t respond directly. An annoyed Mourinho replied to Sconcerti asking for dependable comparisons and emphasising once again that he was doing better than Mancini. [ 229 ] [ 230 ]

( … ) Mio non è sicuramente, mio not è, mio not è, perché memorize me parla come giornalista, a mile può di invitare per cenare convict leu qi io no vado, not siamo amici no ! ( … ) La paragone louisiana fanno voi, la paragone lanthanum fanno voi, voi fanno lanthanum paragone, no io, no io ! — I know – as they already told me – that you are a friend of [ Mancini ‘s ]. ( … ) You are not my supporter for sure, you are not, you are not, because you talk to me as diarist, should you invite me to dinner, I would n’t accept, we are not friends at all ! ( … ) You [ journalists ] are those making comparisons, you are those making comparisons, you are those making comparisons, not me, not me ! I made [ comparisons ] for the first gear time because I said that comparisons must be honest comparisons ! ( … ) yesterday I said that the deviation [ with Mancini ] was 7 points, today I say that the dispute is 9 points. If you want to make comparisons, get ‘s make honest comparisons !

wild celebration against Siena

On 20 December 2008, after Maicon scored the deep gain finish in a difficult away match against Siena, ended 2-1, [ 231 ] Mourinho wildly ran in front of the tiers reserved to Inter supporters to celebrate, hugging Maicon himself. In the post-match consultation, the diarist Maurizio Pistocchi showed his surprise for Mourinho ‘s behavior, which he considered overstate and possibly a miss of esteem to Siena supporters. [ 232 ] The Portuguese director hilariously replied that he was used to that, recalling his iconic celebration in Old Trafford in the second gear peg of the Champions League round off of 16 against Manchester United in 2004, when he was managing Porto, which finally won the tournament, and they scored a substantive 1-1 to win the game 3-2 on aggregate. [ 233 ]

È un’idea petty officer ‘ intellectuale per me, calcio è anche cuore .Especially when an unexpected goal comes, when a winning goal comes, when an undeserved goal comes, when a goal comes while you’re possibly expecting your opponent’s goal, I think that you should say that I am honest, that when the match ended I told Giampaolo [Siena’s manager] that he didn’t deserve to lose the game, that when I came here this is the first thing I said. I celebrated. I celebrated. Maybe I’ll do it again, it’s not a problem for me, it’s not a lack of respect to anyone, it’s not a lack of respect to anyone, and this is football, this is emotion, and I completely disagree with you. (…) You’re a little angry that we won, that I celebrated, aren’t you? I guess you’re a little angry, I guess you’re a little angry, I guess you’re a little angry. We were lucky, you must accept that, football is like this, football is like this. This is a quite intellectual idea for me, football is also passion.

The zeru tituli conference

On 3 March 2009, during a historic weigh conference, Mourinho pointed out that Milan and Roma would end the season with no award and that Juventus had collected a lot of points thanks to referees ‘ mistakes ; he besides accused the italian sport journalists of “ intellectual prostitution ” on their behalf, as they were focusing on a potential mistake regarding a penalty conceded to Inter against Roma rather of talking about the blatant failures of Inter rivals. [ 234 ]

A me not myocardial infarction piace prostituzione intellettuale, not nautical mile piace. Mi piace onestà intellettuale. E dopo, not so, dipende del vostro giudizio, però io iguale a me stesso. E chissà anche noi è meglio no giucare domani, è meglio no giucare fine settimana, perché sta per arrivare forty-nine giurno dello scandalo. [ 224 ] [ 235 ]I don’t like intellectual prostitution, I don’t like it. I like intellectual honesty. Then, I don’t know, it depends on your opinion, but I’m coherent. It seems to me that in this moment, in the last few days, blatant intellectual manipulation, blatant, blatant, blatant intellectual manipulation, blatant work aimed at changing, manipulating public opinion. And this is a great job by a world that is not mine, it’ll be mine until I work in football, but it isn’t my world for real, my world is not this. By the way with huge success, as in the last two days no one talked about a Roma team with very important players, with a lot of players I wanted to have by my side, ending the season with zero titles; no one talked about a Milan team ending the season with zero titles and having players with winning tradition and mentality and everything they needed to win titles; no one talked about a Juventus team gaining a lot of points, a lot of points thanks to referees’ mistakes. When one says that Ranieri [then coaching Juventus] and Spalletti [then coaching Roma] are side by side, I’m side by side with Zenga [then coaching Catania], Prandelli [then coaching Fiorentina], Delneri [then coaching Atalanta], because Zenga lost 3 points against Juventus, Delneri lost 3 points against Juventus, Prandelli lost 3 points against Juventus. And I’m also side by side with Marino [then coaching Udinese], and also side by side with Novellino [then coaching Torino], because it’s better not to play for them during the next weekend: if I were Marino or Novellino, it would be better not play, I would play with my B team, because a yellow card, a tired player, an injured player may happen: they could play with their under 19 team, Torino and Udinese could play with their under 19 team. Maybe it’s better not to play tomorrow even for us, because the day of disgrace is coming. Because when everybody talks this way about the penalty Balotelli won and [Inter] match aginst Roma, it’s this: intellectual manipulation. And this is a game I don’t want to play. (…) Anyway, it’s ok, no one talks about Milan being 11 points behind in the table; no one talks about Roma with the best midfielders in Italy ending the season with zero titles; no one talks about Juventus, their penalties, their hand fouls, their game against Catania, also their game against Palermo with the mistake regarding Marchisio, all the mistakes regarding them, and the offside against Napoli and the fact that there’s a mistake every week. No one talks about none of this. Everybody talks about Mario Balotelli attempting to dribble outside the penalty box, passing through two/three players, winning a penalty – if one doesn’t want to say “It’s penalty”, at least they can’t say “It’s not penalty”, at least they can’t say “It’s not penalty”, one can say “It’s not clear”. And ok, [Spalletti and Ranieri] are side by side, I’m side by side with Zenga, Prandelli, Delneri, Novellino, Marino, I’m side by side with them all.

This rant promptly became popular in Italy, specially regarding the “ zero titles ” quotation used by Mourinho, and incorrectly pronounced by him as zeru tituli ( in correct italian it would have been zero titoli ), which was later extensively referred to by football journalists in Italy. It besides became the title ‘s catchphrase used by fans to celebrate Inter ‘s 17th Scudetto late that season. [ 236 ] [ 237 ] The catchphrase was even used by Nike to present the celebration shirts for Inter ‘s Serie A claim. [ 238 ] After the Coppa Italia final examination in May, fans of Roma ‘s crosstown rivals Lazio, the new Coppa Italia winners, wore shirts with Io campione, tu zero titoli ( “ I ‘m a champion, you have no honor ” ) on it, [ 239 ] quoting Mourinho ‘s “ zeru tituli ” statement.
During the lapp bid conference, Mourinho besides directly attacked Roma director Luciano Spalletti and Juventus director Claudio Ranieri : the early as he was used to endlessly releasing interviews, in contrast with Mourinho, who disliked that in cattiness of the fact that he was considered good at it ; the latter as he never admitted that his team had took advantage of referees ‘ mistakes until Mourinho did that the single meter Inter benefitted an offside goal against Siena ( Maicon ‘s 2-1 winning finish [ 240 ] ). [ 224 ] [ 241 ]

Parla con tutti ![Referring to Spalletti] He talks with the press before the match, at halftime, after the match, he talks with this one, he talks with that one, he’s friends with Ilaria [D’Amico], he’s friends with that one, he’s friends with [Massimo] Mauri [right spelling: Mauro], he’s friends with everyone! He talks with everyone!

The only match after which Inter won points thanks to a referee’s mistake was the one in Siena, and Inter manager held his press conference and said that Inter had won 2 points thanks to a referee’s mistake. The following day, another manager, seemingly watching everything Mourinho does, came, and in this day a team won 3 points in Bergamo thanks to a referee’s mistake, and for the first time this manager, who likes watching Mourinho a lot, decided to say: “Ok, it was offside, my team – white and black striped – didn’t deserve to win this match”.

Italy home team representatives

Mourinho once again trip controversy in the summer with his controversy with Italy home team passenger car Marcello Lippi. Lippi predicted that Juventus would win the Scudetto in the 2009–10 season, which Mourinho viewed as a disrespectful argument to Inter coming from a national team director. Lippi responded by minimising and saying that it was barely a prediction. [ 242 ] [ 243 ] After the course with Lippi, he clashed with Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro over Davide Santon ‘s place in the Inter team. Cannavaro had said that Santon might have to leave Inter to get regular acting time to gain selection for Italy in the approaching World Cup. Mourinho responded by saying that Cannavaro was acting like “ a coach, a sporting director or a president ”. [ 244 ]

incident with Ramazzotti

After Atalanta-Inter 1–1, played on 13 December 2009, [ 245 ] Mourinho attacked the Corriere della Sera diarist Andrea Ramazzotti, who was not allowed to stay near Inter bus according to the Portuguese coach. actually, Ramazzotti had obtained the authorization from both Inter and Atalanta press offices to attend players ‘ interviews in that spot. allegedly, Mourinho not only insulted the diarist but besides grabbed him, thus causing huge controversy. indeed, a lot of colleagues sided with Ramazzotti, defending the general mighty to report news without fearing to be attacked and considering the incidental very serious. [ 246 ] [ 247 ] [ 248 ]
Subsequently, Inter President Moratti phoned Ramazzotti in order to apologize to him. [ 249 ] Furthermore, the Federal Prosecutor referred Mourinho “ for having said, towards the sports diarist Andrea Ramazzotti, nauseating remarks a well as for having grabbed his forearms ”. Inter was besides referred for rigid liabilty. [ 250 ]
A few days after, Mourinho confronted the journalists in the wardrobe league preceeding the Coppa Italia match against Livorno. Inter director explained his behavior and denied he had phisically assaulted Ramazzotti, admitting he had said dysphemistic words he was not proud of. In addition, Mourinho admired the solidarity of Ramazzotti ‘s colleagues and said that he was n’t supposed to apologize in populace as the situation had not happened in public, trying to play down the incident itself. [ 251 ] [ 252 ] [ 253 ]

Si gli chiedo scuse pubbliche ? No, perché no, perché la situazione non era pubblica, la situazione l’ha fatta pubblica lui : not earned run average una situazione pubblica, era una situazione privata. Voglio finire lanthanum storia : illinois miglior modo per finire la storia è finirlo con united nations polonium ‘ di buonumore y di awful che mile aspetto district attorney lui united nations regalo di Natale, perché fino a oggi illinois Ramazzotti famoso earned run average Eros vitamin e adesso illinois Ramazzotti famoso è Andrea .If I apologize to him in public? No, beacuse no, because the situation wasn’t public, he made the situation public: it wasn’t a public situation, it was a private situation. I want to get through this thing: the best way to get through this thing is getting through with a little bit of good humor and saying that I expect a Christmas present from him [Ramazzotti], because until today the famous Ramazzotti was Eros and now the famous Ramazzotti is Andrea.

Two ties in a row

After two away ties in a row against Parma ( 1–1 on 10 February 2010 ) [ 254 ] and Napoli ( 0–0 on 14 February 2010 ), [ 255 ] Mourinho defended Inter performances, stating that he was satisfied with collecting two more points on the road to Serie A deed, despite those results could n’t be considered cocksure per southeast. In particular, the Inter coach used some sharp words regarding Walter Mazzarri and Aurelio De Laurentiis, respectively Napoli coach and President. [ 256 ]

— [Referring to Mazzarri] For some managers who have n’t won even the Lombardy Cup or the Tuscany Cup, a convinced result against Mourinho becomes the greatest accomplishment of his career .

Non hour angle soldi per me. — [About the possibility of managing a team whose President is De Laurentiis] He has n’t adequate money for me .

The handcuffs gesture

During the Serie A game against Sampdoria on 22 February 2010, which ended in a 0–0 tie, with two bury players being sent off in the first gear one-half, Mourinho was completely disappointed by Tagliavento ‘s poor umpirage. At the end of the first one-half, Inter coach made a handcuff gesture towards a camera which was considered by the italian Football Federation as fierce and critical of the referee performance, and caused a three-game bachelor of arts in nursing against Mourinho. [ 257 ] Further complaining happened in the moment half, when the referee denied Inter a quite open penalty, booking Eto’o for diving alternatively, causing Mourinho to laugh ironically as a sign of complain. All the supporters in San Siro sided with Mourinho with an iconic panolada, the dissemble of protesting simbolically waving handkerchiefs, a very unusual shape of protest in Italy. [ 258 ]

Parames ‘ statement

In February 2020, both Ranieri, Juventus director, and Mazzarri, then Napoli director, released some controversial comments about Mourinho : the former said that it was excessively easy to switch from Abramovich, then Chelsea President, to Moratti, then Inter President ; the latter stated that he had won more than Mourinho in symmetry. Despite Moratti ‘s decision to order a press blackout for Inter following controversial refereeing decisions, Mourinho managed to reply to those managers through his spokesman Eladio Parames. [ 259 ]

After reading Mr. Ranieri’s and Mr. Mazzarri’s statements, as press agent but above all as Mourinho’s friend, I want to tell Mr. Ranieri that José has won a lot of titles with both Abramovich’s Chelsea and Moratti’s Inter, as opposed to him, who has won nothing in Abramovich’s club and in the Agnellis’ Juventus team. Instead, I underline to Mr. Mazzarri that a donkey can work a lot yet he will never become a purebred horse. And as far as Porto is concerned, José had a 60 million budget in 2004 and in spite of that he won, while his [Mazzarri’s] club has spent 57 millions just considering the transfer market. And in this regard one should explain to the donkey that the market represents only a part of a society’s budget.

real Madrid

Mourinho was lampooned in Spain following the incident where, as real Madrid bus, he poked then Barcelona adjunct coach Tito Vilanova in the eye. In a 2010–11 Champions League catch at Ajax in November 2010, late in the match when Real Madrid were leading 4–0, two real madrid players received deep irregular yellow cards related to time-wasting. The result of this mean they were suspended for the final group equal even though Madrid would come foremost in the group, but would benefit by entering the circle of 16 without any roll up yellow cards. It was suggested after an investigation by UEFA that this was a deliberate gambit under Mourinho ‘s direction via two players in a substitution.
