  • Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta: Jake is a skilled detective, but often acts immature. He is heavy in debt, as mentioned in the initial two seasons. He also expects people to repair his mistakes, either literally or figureatively. His favorite movie is Die Hard, which he references frequently and even attempts to relive. In the start of season 5, he goes to prison accidentally, but gets out quickly after. He thinks he can do anything, though he often fails.
  • Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa Diaz: Rosa frequently acts tough and behaves as if she has no weaknesses nor emotions, which she has trouble expressing. Rosa also goes to prison alongside Jake for being incorrectly blamed in a crime. She used to be a ballerina as a child, and comes out as bisexual at the end of season 5.
  • Terry Crews as Terry Jeffords: Terry is a family man, having a wife, Sharon, and twin daughters, named Cagney and Lacey, eventually a third in season 3 named Ava. Terry works out frequently and is strong. He has issues with food, and gets angry frequently. For the initial five seasons, he is a Sargent, being addressed as “Sarge” frequently. In season 6, he becomes a lieutenant.

Jake and Amy go on their initial date as a joke in season 1, officially begin dating in season 3, get engaged and marry in season 5, and have a child named Mac at the end of season 7.

  • Chelsea Peretti as Gina Linetti (main seasons 1–6; guest season 8)[a] Captain Holt’s assistant, who acts cool and revolves her whole life around her phone and social media. Gina is Jake’s childhood friend. Gina frequently makes fun of Amy. In season 5, she has a child named Iggy. Gina departs temporarily in the start of season 5 due to Peretti’s real-life pregnancy, and for good in season 6 to build an online brand.

Writers and producers Michael Schur and Dan Goor, who had known each other since they were students at Harvard University, and had collaborated on the situation comedy Parks and Recreation, conceived the mind to set a comedy in a patrol station, a set they felt had been insufficiently used in television receiver comedies since Barney Miller. They pitched the idea to production party Universal Television, where Schur had a growth deal. Although Universal signed on to produce the series, its parent company ‘s network, NBC, passed on airing it, so the duet sold it to the Fox Broadcasting Company. Rotten Tomatoes gave season one a score of 89 % based on 56 reviews.
